Primary Links

At The Swinton High School we recognise that the transfer from primary to secondary school is a major change in a child’s life. The children move from a situation where they are the eldest in one school to the youngest in another. The secondary school is much larger, has many more classrooms than the primary school and there are many more teachers. It is, therefore, critical for the youngsters’ academic progress and their whole personal development that the transition is as smooth as possible.

It is our intention that no child goes home unhappy or upset

We set about achieving this in a number of ways:
Staff at both primary and secondary schools work together to ensure that your child finds the move pleasant, exciting and challenging.

We want all our young people to achieve their full potential

The links and joint activities we have developed are considered crucial to a smooth transition.

By the end of year six, the secondary and primary teachers will have met on many occasions. Your youngster will have met a number of The Swinton High School teachers and pupils. They will have taken part in joint activities. They will have been spoken to on an individual basis and in the summer term will spend a ‘working day’ at the high school. Finally, parents are invited to attend a special intake evening.

For youngsters who are not from our feeder primaries, we follow a similar pattern and, as far as possible, include them all in our activities. We realise that as parents you too will be undergoing some trauma as your youngsters go through the move. If you are concerned about anything, please communicate with us – our partnership includes you.

Between us all we can make this step an enjoyable and rewarding one.

We value your feedback or any suggestions you may have concerning your youngster’s transition.

This is only the beginning of a long and successful partnership

Miss Withers is our designated senior member of staff with responsibility for transition.
