History

history“History helps us to understand change and how the society we live in came to be. The past causes the present and so it causes the future as well”.

The GCSE (WJEC) in History encourages pupils to develop and extend a variety of key skills including the skills of: group work, analysis, explaining, researching, interpreting, questioning and rationalising.

In the third week of July 2011 a trip to Dunkirk will be run for GCSE pupils to examine at first hand the effect of the war upon France and Belgium. Pupils will also have the opportunity to retrace the paths of soldiers from Salford and Manchester.

Topics studied:

In-depth study: Germany in Transition 1929-1947
This unit includes the Study of Germany after World War One, The Rise of Hitler and Hitler in Power.

Thematic Study: Sport, Leisure and Tourism 1900 to the present day
This unit analyses the rise of professional sport in the twentieth century, the effect of changes in working hours, increased leisure time, Billy Butlin, foreign holidays and the importance of sporting idols.

Study in development: Crime and Punishment 1530 to the present day
This unit examines changes and continuities in Crime and Punishment since 1530, the pressures placed upon governments and the social ideas of the times studied.

Pupils are required to complete one Coursework Question.
In the past pupils have been required to complete two coursework questions, however at the request of the exam board, this year this will pupils will complete a Controlled Assessment. As this assessment is worth 25% of the total mark the subject area will be agreed with the exam board once pupils wishing to take History as option have been given the opportunity to choose which area of History they would prefer to study.

  1. Developments in Wales and England in the nineteenth century/early twentieth century.

  2. The effects of war on Wales and England in the twentieth century.

  3. The role of key figures in twentieth century world history.
