Textiles

textilesThe textiles department in the Swinton High School has become a department where pupils flourish, enjoy and develop their creative abilities and interests. You may study recycled fashion, develop your printing skills on our new screen printing machine or become a budding embroider on one of our sewing machines.

Textiles designers are highly motivated, hard workers and also independent thinkers who are not afraid to take creative risks. Textiles will provide you with relevant knowledge; it will also equip you with a range of personal skills ready for college or work:

  • Independent thinking - whilst you are working in class or on workshops with artists / gallery projects.
  • Research Skills – the ability, know how and skills to research, develop and move forward your coursework.
  • Team work: Through working with visiting artists, fashion projects or gallery workshops.
  • Motivation and Enthusiasm: To be able to enjoy, motivate yourself and work on a variety of creative starting points on a number of different projects.

The Art Craft Design and Textiles Department is a young, vibrant, highly motivated and hard working department. Teachers are passionate about their subject; this is evident as you take a walk around our corridors, teaching rooms and school.

Lessons are innovative incorporating up to date technology such as screen printing and embroidery. Fresh, exciting and modern projects are taught to engage, motivate and develop skills of our pupils.
Personal attributes of any budding textile design pupil are:

  • A willingness to work hard, think independently and not be afraid to show your talents.
  • Be able to take creative risks, enjoy being creative and finding your own flare, not following the crowd.
  • A good tome manager, being able to work to tight deadlines, using all resources available to you and most important meeting deadlines.
  • Being flexible, if something doesn’t work straight away, being able to change or develop what you have done, and use the classrooms for extra catch up after school and at dinner times.
  • Most important of all to enjoy what you are doing, to always try your best and to be the best at a subject you enjoy.
