Year 8 Options Guidance

Core Subjects
All pupils will study GCSE English Language, GCSE Maths and GCSE Science as well as an OCR National Qualification in ICT. At the end of year 10 there may be an option of further study in English Literature, Media Studies and Statistics.

Compulsory Subjects
All pupils will study for a BTEC in Performing Arts in year 9. BTEC Sport will be studied as part of regular PE lessons. As part of PSVE, pupils will study for the Preparation for Working Life qualification as well as an Enterprise qualification.

Modern Foreign Languages
If pupils opt to take either GCSE French or Spanish, they must do so in Year 9.

One-year GCSE courses
Most of our option subjects are now one-year courses, with the exception of Business Studies and iMedia. Business Studies and iMedia require 2 blocks each and will be studied over 2 years.

How to choose your options

Each subject is worth a certain number of blocks, either 1 or 2.
You will study 6 option blocks during KS4, with two of those blocks being taken by a compulsory 1 block Performing Arts BTEC qualification and a Core Subject Focus in Year 10.

You will find plenty of example grids, together with further guidance, on the school website.

You must now select a further 4 blocks of study for the next 3 years of your education.

If you opt for French or Spanish, you must start your option in year 9.

You can opt to take any combination of blocks, as long as the total number of blocks adds up to 4.

You are only able to opt for one double option, either iMeda or Business Studies, not both.
