Views from the Pupils

Senior Prefects & Prefects

The school has a prefect system of over 70 pupils’ who are involved in helping to organise events; running lunchtime duties and helping pupils around school. There is also a team of senior prefects who represent the school at various events and are responsible for leading a prefect team. A number of the senior prefects have specific responsibilities in Performing Arts and P.E.

“It was a great achievement to be selected as Head Boy. It gives you an insight into leadership because I am involved in leading a team of 12 prefects. I also get to represent the school at different events.”

“I was honoured to be chosen as Head Girl. It has given me more confidence and I will have the opportunity to represent the pupils at events such as Presentation Evening”

Sports Prefects

A number of year 10 pupils have been trained by Salford Schools’ Sports Partnership to help them organise and help with the running of lunchtime activities. This is proving to be very successful and they have already helped with the organisation of the ‘Primary Sports Action Challenge’.

Rachel and Nathaniel are two of the Sports Prefects: -

Nathaniel
“I enjoy being a sports prefect and find it an uplifting experience. I enjoy working with the year 9 pupils, especially playing 5 a side football”
Peer Mentors

The school is in its third successive year of running a peer-mentoring scheme. Pupils in year 9/10 are trained by the charity ‘Childline’ to become mentors for younger pupils within school. This scheme enables younger pupils to talk to someone other than an adult, about any issues they may have in school.

“In years 7-9 I didn’t get involved in many school activities. Training as a peer mentor has given me more confidence and has encouraged me to talk to other people. My experiences of peer mentoring also give me the confidence to apply for the position of school prefect”

Paige was mentored by a year 10 pupil: -
“It was good being mentored because I got to talk with my mentor every week. I could tell her different things and she was very helpful. I still see her around school and we say ‘hi’ and have a chat”

Here are some more thoughts about our school:

I like the different subjects that you can do at The Swinton High School and I enjoy doing practical work in science. The different performing arts are really cool too!

I really like it here at The Swinton High School! Drama, dance and music are my favourite subjects, so I’m glad I attend a College for the Performing Arts. I love it here and I can’t wait to see what lies ahead for me in the future.

This is my third year at The Swinton High School, and I have really enjoyed my time spent here. I’m looking forward to the year ahead when I can choose my subject options. I enjoy most subjects, the teachers are a great laugh and are very helpful. I would really recommend this school to incoming pupils and I am sure they would enjoy it as much as I have!

I’ve been coming to The Swinton High School for 3 years now. I really enjoy coming here because you can be well educated as well as having fun and enjoying it. You can also have a good laugh with some of the teachers. Since the school became a performing arts college, the vibe around the school has become more relaxed. All around, The Swinton High School is a really good place to be.

I came to the school as a year 7 pupil in 2002 and as many year 7’s are, was quite nervous and scared, but I found out that both the staff and the pupils were very friendly and helpful. The Swinton High School has opened doors for me that I think no other school could. I have greatly enjoyed my time here and the staff are helping me get the qualifications I need to fulfill a successful career.
