Creative and Media Diploma

Aims

This Diploma is a new, innovative and rewarding course. Students combine the theoretical study with practical experience and develop skills highly valued by employers and universities. The Diploma is part of a national programme to provide young learners with more options to encourage them to continue learning for longer. Students studying the Creative and Media diploma will learn how to think, question, explore, create and communicate. Students will master the process common to all creative industries.

What will I study

  • Students will combine classwork with hands on experience and will gain knowledge and skills that can be used for further study at college, university or work in an exciting, creative and enjoyable way.
  • Students will be introduced to a range of creative disciplines including Visual Art, Textiles, Dance, Media and Performing Arts (Drama and Music).
  • Students will develop work relevant skills as well as English, Mathematics and ICT again in a creative and enjoyable way.
  • Students will also experience a variety of work related learning activities linked to creative processes.
    They will complete 6 hours of study per week within their chosen creative discipline which at the moment is a Friday and one lesson on Thursday afternoon.

How will I learn?

The Diploma has brought with it a number of resources available to students which include Apple Mac laptops (Videoing manipulation and Animation facilities), Digital and Movie making cameras as well as funding for various trips into the wide range of creative industries. Students will have to work as a team, with a variety of teachers, outside agencies and other institutions in Salford to complete various projects which reflect the skills learnt as well as the knowledge they have acquired.

How will I be assessed?

The Diploma is made up of areas of study which are:-

  • Principle Learning (Discover creative process)
  • Project (Chosen discipline and present the work)
  • Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (teamwork, creativity and self management)
  • Functional Skills (English, Mathematics and ICT)
  • Additional Specialised learning (Discipline that you choose and further study e.g. Visual Art - photography - using the darkroom)
  • Work-based Learning (10 days of work experience)
  • Students who successfully complete all aspects of the Creative and Media Diploma can expect to gain the equivalent of 7 GCSE at Grades A - C

How it will help me when I leave school?

  • The Diploma will be valued by employers and universities
  • New skills learned will be transferable into the world of work, further education and higher education as well as provide you with an understanding of the world of creative work.
  • Local colleges will offer students the opportunity to study the next level of the Diploma
    Students will be able to transfer to a range of courses with their new qualification
