Aims
The Dance Department aims to develop the growing enthusiasm for this relatively new subject across all age ranges, abilities and genders, and ensure all pupils have an opportunity to develop creativity and skill through dance, by offering the highest quality of teaching by industry professionals.
What will I study?
Students studying dance should expect to study a wide range of dance styles and techniques within their practical sessions. Key stage 3 will study social, ethnic and theatrical forms of dance, as well as dance on television. They will learn the components of dance, the tools of choreography and how to apply them. Key stage 4 students will build upon these skills and focus on the media of dance as communication and expression. Students at this level will develop skills in contemporary, ballet and jazz dance techniques amongst others.
How will I study?
At key stage 3 all students will study dance in year 7 & 8 and in Year 9 as part of the PE carousel. Dance units are practical sessions, encouraging active learning and participation. The technical skills of dance are taught in conjunction with creative sessions that promote the development of imagination and expression. The course of study will include analysis of dance works, promoting artistic discussion.
How will I be monitored and assessed?
End of unit assessment for key stage 3 are practical evaluations that are performance based and grades are awarded for technical skills achieved, creativity of devised choreography and for expression of performance.
Throughout the 2 years of the GCSE Dance course, student progress will be monitored through homework research projects, choreography assignments and performance. The progressions of students dance skills are monitored through technique class. The GCSE course is 70% practical and includes a 2 hour final written exam.
What will happen in KS4?
GCSE Dance students will follow a structured programme of learning including in depth analysis of professional dance works, theatre trips and working with visiting dance artists. The use of video and DVD media is essential to inform and stimulate creativeness. Students will develop the choreography skills that are cultivated at key stage 3 and are encouraged to participate in the many performance opportunities that are offered as part of their course study.
Students who study GCSE Performing Arts will also participate in a number of dance projects as part of their scheme of learning.
