Aims

The Design and Technology faculty aims to combine enthusiasm, creativity, knowledge and experience to provide a team, which strives for excellence across the whole age and ability range in Food Technology, Design Materials, Design Graphics and Electronics.

What will I study?

Delivered via a rotational course, all of the design subjects are constantly being updated and developed to match the requirements of the National Curriculum. At Key Stage 3, pupils experience Food Technology, Design (using wood and plastic), Graphics and Electronics. Computer Aided Design is taught in years seven, eight and nine, the proDesktop course is a recent addition to the programme of study. In all of the subject areas pupils experience activities such as product evaluation, learning to use small and large equipment, computer aided design. A range of materials is used for making.

How will I study?

The Design and Technology staff at The Swinton High School encourage active learning by demonstration, modelling of ideas, discussion and participation in group or pair work. Increasingly, we are using computer programmes, Internet, Interactive Whiteboard, CD ROM, DVD and video to stimulate pupil interest and enhance their learning opportunities. Pupils are expected to produce interesting design ideas and to plan and make the end products. Throughout this process, pupils will develop skills of analysis, assessment and evaluation so that they are able to offer sound opinions based on facts.

How will I be monitored and assessed?

Pupils are given a Design and Technology target level at the beginning of the year and they are given opportunities to improve in each subject area. The teachers assess work regularly and at the end of each module, pupils are tested. Pupils also carry out a self-assessment. Target levels are reviewed at the end of every module. At various times of the year, folders are carefully monitored by staff to ensure that all pupils are working to their full potential.

What will happen in KS4?

Pupils are offered a choice of Design and Technology options – Food Technology, Resistant Materials and Graphics Products – all of which lead to GCSE certification. All courses are concerned with pupils studying and applying the principles and skills of problem solving and decision-making in an active learning situation. These skills include the management of resources, organisation skills and consumer skills in a rapidly changing society.
