Drama lessons are taught in two specialist, well-equipped drama spaces. Drama is taught by two full-time, specialist teachers.
Aims
The aims of the drama course are to allow children to develop their creativity, communication skills, confidence and co-operative skills.
What will I study?
All pupils will study drama at Key Stage 3. The schemes of work embrace both skills- and issue-based approach. Dramatic skills, such as improvisation and role-play, are explored while focusing on issues relevant to the pupils’ needs. Drama, therefore, enhances a pupil’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.
How will I be monitored and assessed?
Key Stage 3 pupils are given levels of assessment according to the agreed standards for drama. Key Stage 4 pupils are assessed in accordance with the exam board guidelines. 60% of the total GCSE mark is teacher assessed and 40% by written exam at the end of the course.
What will happen in KS4?
In drama, pupils extend their previous skills and techniques and develop skills in technical theatre, script, acting technique and appreciations of live performance. The drama GCSE course entails both practical and written work, where students consolidate and extend their learning from KS3. Pupils build upon skills by comparing and contrasting texts and stimuli based on a variety of themes. Assessments are conducted via two teacher-led workshops with written portfolio evidence and a final devised or scripted group performance before a visiting examiner.
The course entails both practical and written work. Pupils are encouraged to reach a high standard of performance and evaluate, in a constructive way, their own work and that of others. The course is then concluded with a written exam. Theatre visits are an integral part of the course.
In Performing Arts, students combine the drama, dance and music elements in a double option. They specialise in one of the art forms to produce a ‘Showcase’: two written portfolios and a final performance based on a commission. This course demands absolute commitment and is a course designed to teach students about the Performing Art Industry.
