Modern Languages

¡ Bienvenidos !
Bienvenue !

The Modern Foreign Languages faculty is located in a corridor close to The Swinton Globe and comprises four full time language specialists.

Aims

The MFL faculty aims to promote effective communication in the foreign language itself as well as encourage wider interest in language and culture.

What will I study?

At Key Stage 3 in Spanish, pupils follow the ‘¡ Mira !’ course. The ‘Expo’ course is followed by pupils studying French. Both brand new courses offer a lively and engaging curriculum with a strong focus on Assessment For Learning to motivate pupils to make full progress through the National Curriculum levels. Via a wide range of resources and activities, (e.g. games, songs, textbooks, CD’s, DVD’s, computer software, the internet, etc.), we aim to enthuse our pupils and make their language learning an enjoyable and rewarding experience.

How will I study?

All pupils study French or Spanish as their foreign language up to the end of Year 9. From the outset, we put a great emphasis on developing fully the communicative skills of our pupils. Our students are encouraged to use Spanish or French from the very first moment that they walk into the classroom and this encouragement is fuelled throughout the course.

How will I be monitored and assessed?

Our pupils are regularly assessed in the four skill areas of the language; Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing, covering aspects relating not only to their own interests and experiences, but involving greater insight into life in French and Spanish speaking countries. This means that by the time they reach Key Stage 4 and start their GCSE studies, they are fully prepared for the demands of the course.

What will happen in KS4?

At Key Stage 4, those pupils who have chosen to study a full course of French or Spanish will complete a two-year programme of work, at the end of which they will take the AQA exam. There is no coursework element involved in this and the pupils’ success is determined by their performance in the four skill areas, (Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing), assessed at Foundation or Higher level in the final exam.
