Physical Education

sports dayAims

Every lesson of physical education at The Swinton High School has the following underlying principles: education; enjoyment; purpose and progression. We provide a broad and balanced curriculum that allows students to develop their knowledge, skills and understanding across many areas. With the major emphasis on participation, students follow a programme of varied and challenging activities that develops their confidence and competency in the subject.

What will I study?

When students enter Year 7, they begin to follow a structured physical education programme that complies with the requirements of the National Curriculum. During KS3, students work on the following areas of activity: games (netball, rugby, football, volleyball, badminton, rounders, softball, basketball), Dance, Gymnastics, Athletics, Outdoor and adventurous activities (orienteering).

How will I Study?

All students have two hours of core physical education every week. The lessons are arranged so that one hour is spent on an outdoor activity and the other session is an indoor one. Within the lesson, students are encouraged to work co-operatively with their peers and use their initiative when appropriate.

How will I be monitored and assessed?

The assessment is carried out according to the attainment targets that are set out in the National Curriculum.
Judgements about a student’s performance are based on the following aspects:

1. Key Concepts : such as competence, performance and creativity
2. Key Processes : such as developing skills; making and applying decisions and evaluating and improving.

We encourage students to extend their learning and opportunities by attending extra-curricular activities after school. By doing so, students become better informed about the types of activity that they can pursue to maintain a healthy active lifestyle.

What will happen in KS4?

When the students enter KS4, the emphasis is on further developing their level of competency in order to give them the confidence to become involved in exercise and activity out of school and in later life.

The programme of activities is similar to KS3 with students working on games activities, athletics and outdoor activities. The department is also introducing health related fitness as a separate programme with activities such as circuit training, fitness testing and aerobics.

BTEC Sport is also offered. This qualification is entirely coursework based ad students can gain up to 4 GCSEs if they successfully complete it.
