The religious studies department is situated in its own building opposite English. One full time specialist RS teacher covers most lessons with the support of one or two non-specialists.
Aims
The RS department aims to give every student the opportunity to achieve excellent standards in all aspects of the KS3 curriculum. By the end of year 9, students will have a knowledge and understanding of varied world religions.
What will I study?
Throughout KS3, students study al of the six major world religions. In year 7 special books, festivals and places of worship are studied. In year 8, Christianity, Sikhism and Judaism are studied in more depth. In year 9 Moral Themes such as abortion, euthanasia, racism and belief in God are covered.
How will I study?
By its very nature, RS is often a “hands on” subject. With many artefacts from the major religions much of the learning is active. Videos on various Rites of Passage, festivals, etc. are also used to bring these aspects of the religion to life. Using the computer suites, CDRoms, the Internet and ICT for RS are also put to full use.
How will I be monitored and assessed?
Pupils’ classwork and homework are carefully and regularly assessed to make sure pupils are working to their targets. Tests are set for the end of each unit or topic as a form of continual assessment.
